April 22, 2010

Dear Fellow Aficionados,

Just a few comments about The Legends of Riverside II last month's newsletter. Wow, another newsletter within a month. Well, my web designer, Lisa Kuhn, suggested putting them out more often and keeping them short. So here goes.

Last month Legends of Riverside II is definitely worth a few words. Building on last year's event with Dan Gurney as honoree, Carroll Shelby did not disappoint. He enthralled the hundreds of attendees with many seldom heard tails from his not so misspent youth (below left).

Carroll Shelby Carroll Shelby & Marilyn Fox Derek Hill & Alma Hill

(Above center) Perennial trophy girl Marilyn Fox chats with Carroll about the days not so long ago. (Above right) Derek Hill, a racer in his own right, and his mother Alma reminisce about Phil Hill.

Family members of Dave MacDonald, Ron Bucknum and Richie Ginther all shared personal stories of these legendary drivers. And, don't forget the films. It is a film festival. It's pricey, but well worth it.

This is our third year displaying our vintage photographs. Since moving closer to civilization the crowd has grown and the number of driving greats has doubled. There must have been 60 to 70 personalities from the day in attendance. Shelby is a great draw and our photographs were being snapped up for autographs.

Martha and Paul Weida get Dan Gurney's signature

Above Martha and Paul Weida get Dan Gurney's signature on their just purchased photo of 1963 Riverside race. The great thing about this is that four drivers in the first two rows of the race were there to sign, Gurney, Bob Bondurant, Lew Spencer and Allen Grant. They also let Dick Guldstrand sign, even though he was not in the race, because of a sever crash in his Stingray on Saturday.

Historically yours,

Allen R Kuhn
